Jacob deGrom Lands on the DL: Fantasy impact

The Mets will be without their top pitcher Jacob deGrom for at least 10 days. How should fantasy owners react to the news?

The New York Mets suffered another injury to their starting rotation, something they’ve been familiar with over the last three seasons. Jacob deGrom has been primarily healthy in that span, making at least 24 starts in each season. However, he was placed on the 10-day DL early Sunday morning.

deGrom suffered an injury when taking a swing on Wednesday. It was revealed that he The early reports state that he could miss up to four starts. “Initially two Mets sources said they expected deGrom — who has a hyperextended elbow — to miss at least four starts based on the initial diagnosis…”

However, the MRI revealed no ligament damage. Mets manager Mickey Callaway and deGrom himself expected him to make his next start on Monday, which is a complete turn of events. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case.

While there is no significant damage to the elbow, the Mets are being extra cautious with their top pitcher. With the way the Mets schedule pans out, deGrom could only miss one start. His fantasy owners should be jumping with joy that he will miss just one start.

The number of injuries already this season is ridiculously high. There are a few replacement options on the waiver wire but none at the caliber of deGrom.

In his seven starts this season, deGrom has a 1.87 ERA, 0.992 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 with a 3-0 record. He is tied for sixth in strikeouts with 54.  Four of his seven games have been quality starts. deGrom was one out away from adding a fifth in his first start of the season.

If you are in need of a streaming option while deGrom is out, there are some serviceable names available in most leagues. Michael Soroka of the Braves looked good in his first start and is already getting picked up. He faces the Giants in his next start.

I wrote about Sean Newcomb already but he’s worth mentioning again. He has a two-start week lined up. Matthew Boyd has also looked good in a majority of his starts. You don’t need these pitchers to perform well all season, but just enough to fill the void deGrom leaves in your lineup.

Unless some other news comes out between now and his return date, deGrom should be back by the middle of next week. He’s still one of the best pitchers in the game and should not see the waiver wire in any league. deGrom will pitch like one once he returns.
